While you’re on your summer vacation, come to the Zoo and get a taste of what it’s like to Work on the Wild Side

This three part series at Roger Williams Park Zoo will provide guests with a chance to get a better look at some of the unique jobs that exist at our Zoo. 

Activities for Work on the Wild Side will run from 11am-3pm each day (all activities are weather permitting and run 11-3 unless otherwise noted).

keeperFriday July 30, 2010 - Zookeeper Day
Our series continues with a look into the wild world our Zookeepers.   Cleaning up after a giraffe, giving an elephant a bath, feeding a bald eagle or providing play opportunities for a moon bear - just another day in the life of a Zookeeper. 

 

 

Meet a Keeper – Enjoy the opportunity to see a keeper in action at the following exhibits:

  • 10:30am Elephant Bath inside the Elepahnt and Giraffe pavilion; Elephant Keeper Talk immediately following
  • 11am Farmyard Keeper Talk and Enrichment Demo located in the Farmyard
  • 11am Red Tailed hawk animal encounter located by the Wilderness Cafe
  • 12pm Gibbons Keeper Talk located at the Gibbons Exhibit
  • 1pm Kangaroo Keeper Talk located at Kangaroo Exhibit
  • 2pm Wrinkled Hornbill meet and greet located outside the Australasia Building
  • 2pm Prehensile-Tailed Porcupine painting demo and enrichment demo located in Tropical America Building
  • 2:30pm Tropical America animal enrichment located in the Tropical America Building
  • Camel Keeper Talk - Time TBD; Located in front of the Camel Exhibit

Enrichment Creation Station – Help us create fun items for our animals to play with and enjoy.  (Animals that will receive enrichment and enrichment times TBD)

Our series concludes with a focus on our Education and Conservation initiatives.  Our main mission is to educate our guests and foster a love of animals and nature that will carry over into their everyday life.

Conservation Table: Learn about our American Burying Beetle Recovery Program, Karner Blue Butterfly Habitat Restoration Project, Frog Watch program and more.

Animal Handling Table: Learn what it takes to work with our Education Ambassador animals.

Find out about our intern and volunteer opportunities and how you can get involved.

Graphics Table:  Try your hand at creating graphics for animal exhibits and learn all that goes into making the perfect sign.

Biofacts Table:  These educational tools of the trade help connect our guests to our animals by providing an up close look at everything from a giant elephant molar to a tiny frog skeleton.

Education Programs Table:  Our Education Department offers amazing learning experiences for all ages.  Find out what’s best for you.

Journey Through the Wild schedule:
Presented by the Zoo’s Wild Bunch.  As part of the Education Department, the Wild Bunch is a troupe of on-grounds performers that use the arts to educate, entertain and inspire Zoo visitors.
